Lawrence Journal World Article: KDOT to present options for South Lawrence Trafficway improvements, including adding tolls
City leaders will hear an update on the state’s efforts to widen or otherwise improve travel on the South Lawrence Trafficway, including the option of making the trafficway a toll road.
For state Rep.-elect Mike Amyx, D-Lawrence, addressing the “monster” Kansas Highway 10 corridor in the Lawrence area will be a priority during his freshman session as a member of the Kansas House of Representatives.
Three intersections on the western leg of the South Lawrence Trafficway have become so dangerous that they’ve produced 53 accidents in 20 months, Kansas Department of Transportation statistics show.
City leaders will consider adding three issues to their list of legislative priorities, including a statement opposed to making the South Lawrence Trafficway into a toll road.
Given the rate of accidents, it is appropriate for the Kansas Department of Transportation to close the intersection of Kasold Drive and the South Lawrence Trafficway. KDOT will close the intersection Dec. 3. KDOT said more than 28 crashes have happened at the intersection since 2016, when the eastern leg of the trafficway — officially Kansas Highway 10 — was opened, increasing traffic on the road. The accidents occurred despite safety improvements at the time of the east leg’s opening to restrict the intersection to only right turns, on and off of the highway.
Notes left on a comment board Wednesday at a public informational meeting on proposed upgrades for Kansas Highway 10 left no doubt about what was on attendees’ minds: “No tolls.”
